Cross grind wheels are used to reset the blade before the final sharpen. They help clean up damaged steel, remove old hollows, level out inconsistent edges, and prep the blade for a fresh finish grind.
Most sharpeners will cross grind when dealing with:
- heavy edge damage
- inconsistent previous sharpenings
- profile work
- new steel
- badly worn blades
Once the blade is reset, the finishing wheel can apply a clean, consistent hollow.
